A pioneer project in the Algarve Situated in the heart of the Algarve, Portimao, the Penina Championship Golf Course is considered the most brilliant project of Sir Henry Cotton, triple champion of the British Open. Back in 1966, the experienced Cotton was one of the first to recognize the Algarve’s huge potential as a golfing destination. Following his instincts, Sir Henry's vision was "natural", he was fascinated by the great all-year round climate (including during fall and winter when most of the clubs in the UK are closed) coupled with the sheer beauty of the original site. With the Penina Golf course, Sir Cotton conceived a layout, which would - after the introduction of literally thousands of trees and bushes - become transformed. The unprecedented boom which followed that pioneering step that resulted today in the existance of some 40 golf courses in the Algarve and more to come! A course with harduous challenges The Penina Golf Course is a fairly flat parkland type course with almost four hundred thousand trees, plenty of water, many bunkers, with wide greens and a vast tee area, making Penina a real championship golf course. Characteristics of a well-known venue A major revitalisation programm in 2004/2005 refreshed the Penina Golf Course to stay on the highest level of quality. Penina Championship is characterised by an unusual grouping of par-5's, with four of them arranged together in pairs at the beginning and end of the back nine. Of all the Penina's par-3, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world! The hole presents its own, particular challenge. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tees, while the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of bunkers. Prestigious tornments The Penina Golf Course has hosted the "Portugal Open" 9 times, the last 5 hosts being in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004 and 2006. Prestigious society events have contributed to the venue fame such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors' Match (2000/2001), the National finals of the Audi Corp, together with Charity competitions such as the Sir Henry Cotton team Trophy and Sir Henry Cotton Charity classic (in Nov. and May respectively).
